The 2005-6 programme of activity is currently being shaped and the events planned to date include:
  • Opening Meeting: Reuse of Knowledge in Project Based Organisations, at the Digilab, BBC Television Centre, West London on June 8th.

This first meeting of the new programme was on knowledge and the Project Based Organisation. Responding to the fact that more and more of us are moving towards being project-based organisations in the public and private sector. We designed this opening meeting to launch our next KM Forum Programme. Two speakers shared the way they approach delivering projects on time and on spec., while seeking to continuously improve process in this important area.

The Director of Engineering Projects at ARM, the leading global company designing RISC chips (see
www.arm.com), shared how ARM manages over 140 projects simultaneously in 10 design centres in the US, Europe and Bangalore deploying 800 engineers. His team of 30 Project Managers work with the Engineering Managers who own the engineering resource, the aim always being to capture, disseminate and propagate improvements from each project.

The Project Director of the Production Modernisation Programme at the BBC said the challenge with creative people is often to have them collaborate to share ways that they have succeeded in projects, and he discussed what happened that provided learning points that others might use. Often competition comes into the equation and process improvement is a challenge for management.

This meeting gave us a chance to discuss two very different facets of managing projects in large organisations. The meeting was being kindly hosted in the Digilab at the BBC Television Centre, White City.

  • Leading Organisational Change at The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, 12 George Street, Parliament Square, London on 21st September.

This meeting will be focusing on insights on the theme of leading change in large public and private sector organisations, and the issues around building, retaining and exploiting knowledge in this context.

The Change Integration and Internal Communications Manager at Cadbury Schweppes will take us through the massive global change programme that took place over 3 years at Cadbury Schweppes; The Director of HR and Corporate Services at Ordnance Survey will be sharing the motivation for and execution of a change and re-branding exercise at the Ordnance Survey; and the Advisor, Organisation and Resourcing, at the CIPD will be highlighting some of the key outputs of the three-year research programme ‘Organising for Success’ at the Chartered Institute for Personnel Development, the premier HR professional body in the UK.

  • Performance Measurement: a tools and techniques workshop on Tuesday October 25th. Venue to be finalised.

This meeting will aim to expose members to practical ways to measure value created in the organisation. The aim will be to explore how this can be done, the level of benefit and pointers towards tools and techniques

The Catalyst Group will be presenting an overview of the spectrum of tools available for performance measurement; Scottish Enterprise will outline the case for the balanced scorecard implementation at Scottish Enterprise and the achievements to date. We hope also to have a presenter from Abbey or O2, explaining how they measure performance inside their organisation.

  • Knowledge from the Customer Interface, on Tuesday 22nd November. Further details under discussion.

This meeting will focus on how building a strong relationship with customers (and others in the supply chain) can deliver knowledge which can be used in many ways to develop products and services, and to ensure value is created for the organisation.

The expert charged with integrating the systems of the Inland Revenue and HM Customs has agreed to share how this should enable a new view of the 'customers' and deliver insights that can drive forward a new relationship. We also expect to have a figure from the world of retail tells us how the emerging field of client relationship management is developing.

  • Possible drinks gathering mid December.

  • Other meetings in the pipeline for 2006 will include:
    • Retaining Competency and Rightsizing the Organisation, with a presentation from Morgan Stanley about their off-shoring programme and key skills acquisition.

    • Creating Value from Knowledge for all Stakeholders,  with a presentation about how $40 mill of value was created for Talisman Energy over 12 months of intervention.
